New Southern Railway
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
The New Southern Railway was Sydney’s largest transport infrastructure project in the lead up to the 2000 Olympics. The new-tunnelled railway links the East Hills line into the CityRail network via Sydney Airport.
Mascot Station is located in a strategic position on the route, between Sydney’s CBD and the airport. This underground station is a 23m deep-strutted excavation which comprises four floors acting as permanent supports to diaphragm walls as well as meeting the station functional requirements. The scope of services included the structural design of the station and the design for the receipt and launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine, tympan wall design and the design of all mechanical, hydraulic and fire protection.
Many options were analysed and the design team worked closely with the constructor ensuring efficient, cost effective solutions. The structural analysis included the development of a 3D computer model to establish the effects of a seismic event
