Perth Urban Rail Expansion
Perth, Western Australia
The Perth passenger rail network is being expanded to the north, south, and south-east. This represents a doubling of the existing network and will be the largest publicly funded infrastructure project ever undertaken in Western Australia.
Maunsell have been at the forefront in the development of the project through our work with the Public Transport Authority which has included a number of concept design studies, preparation of various specifications for the northern extension, the design of overhead wiring modifications on the existing network and the design and documentation of the Package A works for the South West Metropolitan Railway.
Package A work has included the civil works, structures, roads, track, overhead wiring, traction power supply, signaling and communications associated with the 72km of new double track railway to Mandurah. Maunsell has an ongoing role in the evaluation of tenders and in the provision of technical support during the construction and commissioning phases of the project.
Maunsell are also the lead designers for the Leighton Kumagai Joint Venture which is undertaking the Perth tunnel works as part of this project. This comprises approximately 2.5km of railway predominately in cut and cover and bored tunnel and includes two new underground stations in central Perth. With a mixture of bored and cut and cover tunnelling, very tight curves, station construction below existing buildings (some heritage) and the need to minimise disruption to railway operations and the general public, significant innovative engineering design is required.
There is a significant multi-disciplinary aspect to the work, with Maunsell providing the design management expertise to deliver the project within tight timescales. The project is demonstrating Maunsell's capability for forming design teams nationally and internationally, using resources from all our offices in Australia and our offices in the Philippines and London.
Together these contracts represent the majority of the infrastructure works associated with the South West Metropolitan Railway and Maunsell is continuing to play a leading role in the successful delivery of the project.
