Regatta Ferry Terminal

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Maunsell has played a major part in the rejuvenation of the Brisbane River as a popular travel mode in recent years, with the Regatta Ferry Terminal the ninth that the company has designed since 1994. Brisbane's Lord Mayor, Cr Jim Soorley, opened the Regatta terminal in April 2003.

Maunsell has designed all the new terminals constructed for berthing the popular 25m Citycats and has also designed the city's main gateway Riverside Terminal, completed in June 2003.

One of the key challenges facing engineering designers was to find the optimum location for the terminal. The 1974 floods had caused the riverbank adjacent to the Regatta Hotel to subside, also destroying that section of Coronation Drive. Large boulders and dumped rock had to be brought in to shore up the riverbank. Thirty years later, designers had to undertake extensive geo-technical and seismic investigations to determine the extent of the dumped rock to find a location where the piles could be driven to erect the terminal.
