2020 Port Master Plans: Botany Bay and Sydney Harbour
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Due to pressure from increasing trade and urban growth, the Sydney Ports Corporation commissioned a Port Master Plan for Botany Bay and Sydney Harbour. This followed on from earlier work by Maunsell on the Sydney Ports Land Use Strategy.
The Master Plan addressed the growing need for improved ports productivity, associated environmental and social issues, and limitations on land and water availability. The plan provides the basis for decision making on port development to 2020 and beyond.
The study included analysis of cargo and shipping trends, site assessment, preparation of port layout options, capacity analysis, identification of environmental and intermodal issues. Maunsell assessed the options and formulated both the Master Plan and the staged development program for the client.
Planning allows for increased container terminal facilities at Botany Bay and for rationalisation of the existing Glebe Island/White Bay port facilities
Key features of the plan provided for:
- growth in container traffic provided for at Botany
- Sydney Harbour port operations preserved in the medium term
- multipurpose, dry bulk and liquid bulk terminals to meet demang
- rail and road access improved
- strategic land held in reserve for port-related industry
- compatability with Sydney Airport operations
Pressure on land transport connections was also considered, providing an integrated plan to serve as a secure framework for future investors, government planners and regulatory bodies.
