Water Asset Management System
Manukau, New Zealand
Manukau Water is a business unit of Manukau City Council that implemented an Asset Management Information System (AMIS) for the purpose of assisting them with the management of their water, wastewater and stormwater networks. The core of this AMS is the Hansen IMS applications software on an SQL Server RDBMS. In addition ArcView GIS and Crystal Reports software complement a Users desktop PC working environment to provide a comprehensive range of asset management systems functionality. ArcSDE is used in a "back office" environment for managing and updating all data for Hansen IMS and ArcView application functions.
Maunsell Information Services Department was appointed to provide support for this AMS environment focussing mostly on the Hansen IMS and Crystal Reports applications software. Maunsell's knowledge of Manukau Water's business and expertise in the use of the Hansen software led to this appointment.
While the project was a formal engagement, because Manukau Water had no in-house expertise, Maunsell's role became one of a partnering/secondment type arrangement often requiring a full-time presence in Manukau Water's office. The implementation and use of Hansen was focussed on supporting business processes and a key part of the role was defining and documenting those processes in terms of making use of the Hansen software and then providing extensive hands-on training to end users.
Maunsell have continued in a partnering/secondment type arrangement and are used as an overflow resource, work on special projects that require a high level of Hansen expertise, or stand in for the Hansen Administrator.
