Brisbane Waste Disposal System: Transfer Stations and Landfill
Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Maunsell has played an ongoing role in the development of landfill and waste transfer stations for the city of Brisbane. The waste system consists of four recycle and transfer stations and a landfill facility.
Maunsell developed the Environmental Impact Study for both landfill and transfer stations. Investigations were required for potential effects including odour and dust, water quality, noise, health, visual amenity, hydrology and geology, insects and rodents as well as potential social impacts. Maunsell provided constant and effective liaison with authorities completing activities within the short timeframe.
The two major stations, at Nudgee and Willawong, cater for up to 250,000 tonnes annually. Overall the stations allow private and commercial vehicles to deposit up to 600,000 tonnes of waste material within enclosed buildings for compaction before final disposal.
The landfill was the first fully engineered landfill in Australia and has been recognised as setting the standard for ventures that follow.
As a Greenfield development, the proposed project was politically and socially sensitive. Maunsell provided community consultation processes as well as planning and approval, permit and licensing processes.
Since 1994 Maunsell has continued to provide ongoing engineering support to Brisbane City Council in the operations and maintenance of the facilities.
