The municipality of Docklands is Victoria's newest. Historically the area was a working port and rail yard but most had fallen into disuse. The waterfront became the 220 ha site of one of Australia's most ambitious urban renewal schemes.

Adjacent to Melbourne's central business district, this prime location on the Yarra River is expected to house between 10,000 to 15,000 people by 2020.

Maunsell has provided engineering consultancy services and seconded staff to various stages of the development.

Geotechnical engineering was an early requirement to resolve the difficulties of undertaking major development on extremely soft soils. Stormwater management, planning and controls needed to be put in place early.

Maunsell's role has involved feasibility and strategic planning, infrastructure design, maritime, geotechnical, structural and civil engineering. Project management, contract administration and construction supervision services have also been supplied.

Maunsell provided the Docklands Authority's with a Project Director for the establishment of the Colonial Stadium, a major sporting complex undertaken by private developers.

Maunsell was engaged as City Manager, which involved civil and road engineering design, approvals and permits, emergency callouts, asset management, maintenance contract management, traffic management and drainage authority referrals.
