Company History
Maunsell is one of the fastest growing engineering consulting firms in the Asia-Pacific region, with 2,400 staff and an operational reach that includes major offices across Australia, New Zealand, and South East Asia (the ANZA region).
Maunsell was originally established in the ANZA region in 1956, shortly after being founded in the United Kingdom. The company’s first Australian project was the design of a bridge on the Derwent River in Tasmania.
Across the region the company is recognised as a top-tier firm in transport infrastructure, buildings, environment, power and energy, and minerals and industry. Transportation projects include mega transport projects such as the Brisbane North-South Bypass Tunnel (Queensland, Australia), the Gateway Bridge Upgrade (Queensland, Australia), and the multi award winning M7 Motorway in Sydney, Australia.
Maunsell has expanded its market coverage to win major projects including the billion dollar Argyle Diamonds Underground Expansion Project (Western Australia), Sydney’s Port Botany Expansion (New South Wales, Australia), and design for the Australian Defence Force Headquarters Joint Operations Command facility (Australian Capital Territory).
Maunsell’s industry leading position is based on the expertise and project management capabilities of its staff, with a reputation for delivering world class design solutions for complex projects. The company’s recent hallmark projects include Australia’s 2006 Project of the Year*, Lawrence Hargrave Drive (New South Wales, Australia), and the Brisbane Inner City Bypass (Queensland, Australia).
Strategic mergers have enabled Maunsell to secure competitive differentiation in key regional markets. In October 1998, Maunsell merged with Queensland engineers McIntyre & Associates and mining engineers MAMIC, gaining a strong foothold in the regional Australian minerals and industry sector.
In 2000, Maunsell ANZA joined with its colleagues in the international Maunsell Group to merge with AECOM.
In 2002 Maunsell advanced its international expansion into the New Zealand market, merging with New Zealand’s dominant power and energy engineering firm, Meritec, broadening Maunsell’s specialist capabilities and introducing new opportunities for project work in the Asia Pacific region.
In October 2004, Maunsell merged with Australian consulting engineers Bassett, an industry leader in building services. Operating under a distinct banner, Bassett now leads Maunsell’s advancement in the buildings sector.
The success of these mergers, coupled with organic growth, has helped to position Maunsell as one of the top 5 engineering services firms in the ANZA region.
Maunsell is also uniquely positioned as a pioneer in Alliance project models for complex projects. Alliancing is a highly specialised approach to project management, working within a commercial framework that protects return on investment and service delivery of the highest standard. The commercial and technical success of the multi-award winning Woodlawn Bioreactor in New South Wales is an outcome of the alliance model. New Alliance projects include the Trackstar Rail Alliance and Inner Northern Busway (both Queensland, Australia) and the Hume Highway Duplication (New South Wales).
Maunsell’s growth since joining AECOM is expected to continue with staff numbers reaching 3,000 by 2010. The ANZA Group is led by Chief Executive Nigel Robinson, who also leads AECOM's Middle East Group, with its principal operating company Cansult Maunsell.
